Monolithi Beach

monolithi beach

Monolithi is a long sandy beach, on the west coast of Preveza regional unit, Greece. The total length of the beach is 22 km and it is the longest beach in Europe. It is extended from Mytikas until Kastrosikia village. The name Monolithi comes from Greek roots “Μόνος” + “Λίθος” = “single” + “stone”, after a projecting rock about ten meters high, that could be seen from the beach until it was destroyed by German and Italian soldiers with mortar fire in 1942. Today the rock exists as an undersea reef 10 cm from the surface.

Monolithi Beach is a popular choice for locals and tourists alike, offering a stunning landscape and crystal-clear waters. The beach is backed by the Monolithi Forest, creating a picture-perfect scene that wouldn’t be out of place in a Hollywood movie.

Monolithi is known for being one of the safest and cleanest beaches in the area, making it an ideal choice for families with young children. The beach is also a favorite among those seeking tranquility and seclusion, as there are plenty of spots to spread out your towel and relax in peace.

For those who prefer a livelier atmosphere, Monolithi also has something to offer. Several beach bars line the shore, offering coffee, food, and drinks from early morning until sunset. These bars also feature DJs and parties on Saturdays, making them a great spot to enjoy good music and delicious cocktails.

Whether you’re looking for a relaxing day by the sea or a lively party atmosphere, Monolithi Beach has something for everyone. With its stunning scenery, clear waters, and excellent facilities, it’s no wonder that Monolithi is one of the most popular beaches in Preveza.

Details about Monolithi that only locals know

Monolithi Beach is a jewel in Preveza’s crown, captivating visitors with its stunning scenery, crystal-clear waters, and lively atmosphere. However, before you pack your beach bag and head out, here are a few things to keep in mind to ensure a smooth and enjoyable experience:

The depth increases rapidly

Monolithi Beach boasts a captivating characteristic – it drops off sharply. Just 4-5 steps into the water, you’ll find yourself no longer touching the ground. While this may seem daunting at first, it’s important to remember that the buoyancy of the water will keep you afloat.

Here are a few tips to keep in mind when swimming at Monolithi Beach:

  • Be cautious: The sudden change in depth can be startling, so it’s important to approach the water with care.
  • Don’t panic: The buoyancy of the water will keep you afloat, even if you can’t touch the ground.
  • Relax and enjoy: Once you’ve adjusted to the depth, you can relax and enjoy swimming in the crystal-clear waters of Monolithi Beach.

Mind the Waves

While generally calm, Monolithi can experience occasional strong waves. Be cautious when entering the water, especially with children. In summer months if you visit monolithi after 2 p.m you will see a different environment than the morning visit. Because of a wind phenomenon locals calls it “Maistros”, the sea gets rought with a great deal of waves. This stops after about 8-9pm when the temperature gets lower.

Saturday and Wednesday parties

If you are visiting monolithi you must be aware that Saturdays can get lively at Monolithi. Several beach bars host parties with loud music. Consider heading to the more secluded areas of the beach if you seek a quieter experience.

Alonaki Fanariou

alonaki fanariou beach

Nestled amidst the lush greenery of Preveza, Alonaki Fanariou Beach emerges as a hidden gem, a tranquil oasis waiting to be discovered. Lying approximately 25-30 minutes from Preveza city, it is the farthest beach featured in this article, but trust me, the distance is well worth it.

Reaching Alonaki Fanariou’s Enchanting Embrace

To reach this secluded paradise, you’ll embark on a scenic drive through the charming village of Valanidorachi. As you venture further, the landscape transforms into a tapestry of wild nature and olive groves. At a junction marked “Pros Alonaki,” don’t hesitate to follow the sign, for the GPS might just lead you astray. Trust the path and you’ll be richly rewarded.

A Cove of Tranquility and Crystal-Clear Waters:

Upon arrival, you’ll be greeted by a picturesque cove, a small inlet sheltered by a majestic rock formation. The shoreline transitions from sandy to pebbled as you enter the water, so consider bringing along a pair of water shoes for added comfort. The true highlight of Alonaki Fanariou lies in its breathtaking turquoise waters, crystal clear and inviting.

Beach Amenities and Tips:

A convenient beach bar graces the shore, offering refreshing beverages, snacks, and even complimentary sunbeds. However, due to the limited number of sunbeds and the absence of umbrellas, it’s advisable to bring your own umbrella and chairs for ample shade. Sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat are essential, as there’s no natural shade along the beach.

Finding Serenity and Avoiding Crowds:

Given its intimate size, Alonaki Fanariou can get crowded during peak summer months. To avoid the hustle and bustle, consider visiting early in the morning or later in the afternoon. The tranquility and cooler temperatures of the morning make for an especially enchanting experience.

Scala Beach: A Neighboring Delight

If you’re seeking another hidden gem, venture to Scala Beach, just a stone’s throw away from Alonaki Fanariou. This unique beach is accessed via a staircase that descends to the shoreline, creating a dramatic contrast between the land and the sea. Here, you’ll find a charming cantina managed by Mr. Christos, offering delectable Italian espresso and mouthwatering hot dogs.

A Local’s Perspective:

As a local, I can wholeheartedly recommend visiting Alonaki Fanariou and Scala Beach at least once if you visit Preveza. The scenery is simply magical, offering a sense of rejuvenation and tranquility. Me, I am visiting each beach at least once every summer to blow off some steam and enjoy this scenery.
